A heterocyclic hormone derived enzymatically from tryptophan or, in humans, synthesized in the intestinal chromaffin cells or in central or peripheral neurons. It acts as a vasoconstrictor by stimulating contraction of smooth muscle, and as a neurotransmitter in mammalian and other central nervous systems. It also has pharmacologic properties and is a precursor of melatonin. Serotonin is present in high concentrations in the central nervous system, intestinal mucosa, and pineal body.
