| | Definition: Non-Metallic Abrasive -
A blast cleaning abrasive made from naturally-occurring, by-product, or manufactured materials. Naturally-occurring abrasives include silica sand, olivine, staurolite, flint, garnet, zirconium, and other minerals. By-product abrasives include those from smelters (i.e., nickel, copper, or iron slag) and power plants (coal or boiler slag) and those from agricultural products (e.g., walnut shells or corncobs). Manufactured abrasives include silicon carbide, aluminum oxide, and glass beads. |
