A compound of magnesium, carbon, and oxygen of the formula MgCO3 that is the mineral form of magnesium carbonate of the calcite group. Properties: clear, brown, or white in color; trigonal crystalline structure; hardness of 3.75 to 4.25 on the Moh's scale; specific gravity of 3.0 to 3.1. Magnesite is typically an alteration product of rock rich in magnesium where it forms compact to granular masses. Magnesite is primarily used for making refractory bricks for high-temperature furnaces. (Synonyms: giobertite, MgCO3) |
