A compound of magnesium, carbon, and oxygen of the formula MgCO3 that is the mineral form of magnesium carbonate of the calcite group. Properties: clear, brown, or white in color; trigonal crystalline structure; hardness of 3.75 to 4.25 on the Moh's scale; specific gravity of 3.0 to 3.1. Magnesite is typically an alteration product of rock rich in magnesium where it forms compact to granular masses.
