An infectious nervous system disease caused by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes and transmitted in humans through the ingestion of contaminated food. It mainly affects adults who are immunosuppressed or pregnant and it has a special affinity for growth in the central nervous system, usually expressed as meningitis, and the placenta, where it leads to a high rate of spontaneous abortion or stillbirth. |
