An eicosanoid consisting of a straight chain carboxylic acid with 20 carbons, one or two oxygen substituents, and three or more conjugated double bonds. It is derived from arachidonic acid by the lipoxygenase pathway, and may serve as a mediator of the allergic response or as a chemotactic factor. It is released from mast cells in certain inflammatory reactions, causes smooth muscle constriction, and attracts polymorphonuclear leukocytes and eosinophils to sites of injury or infection.
