| | Definition: Cristobalite -
A white or gray, translucent to opaque tetragonal silicate mineral which is a high-temperature polymorph of quartz and tridymite. It is stable only above 1470 degrees Celsius, and occurs as fibrous masses and, usually twinned, crystals, having a specific gravity of 2.33 and a hardness of 6.5 on the Mohs scale. It is found in igneous rocks or as opaline silica formed at low temperatures. Synonyms: SiO2 |
