A mineral that is of the formula CaCO3. Calcite is the primary component in sandstone. Properties: doubly refracting, uniaxial negative, trigonal, hardness of 3 on the Mohs scale, specific gravity of 2.711, dimorphous with aragonite. Calcite may be used to produce polarizing prisms.
