A powdered, granular, or pelleted form of carbon with a high adsorptive capacity due to its large number of fine pores. Heating carbon to 900 degrees with steam or carbon dioxide activates it and cleanses bound activated carbon for reuse. Affinity for gases, vapors, and colloidal solids makes it useful for odor, fume, and other pollution control, and in gas masks. Especially good for removing organics.
