Expert having completed a post-doc and 12 years in academia went into the plant biotechnology industry at the very beginning. As such he has been involved in crop genetic engineering from the beginning with over 20 years of experience in transforming potatoes and then cereals to alter primary metabolism. Expert was involved in the first commercial field trials in the UK of transgenic potatoes and has served on advisory boards to develop the risk assessment strategies for these. As such he has therefore built up an extensive knowledge of plant metabolism and physiology, crop growth in the field, and processing of the harvested crops, especially into starch and snack foods such as crisps/chips and French fries. Such work has also involved the molecular analysis of gene expression and molecular breeding with tools such as RFLPs SNPs and others. Some 30 patent applications arose from the work. As part of his work he has always had to analyse plant metabolism. In recent years this has meant the use of the latest chromatographic methods and the use of mass spectrometers in particular MALDI mass spectrometers to measure metabolites at the single cell level and nanospary ionisation to measure small volumes of plant extracts.
