Expert also has special expertise in both rare-earth and ferrite permanent magnet materials. Expert worked under the guidance, supervision and tutelage of Dr. Karl Strnat -- the “Father of Rare-Earth Permanent Magnets” at the University of Dayton from 1982-1985, and he further developed his expertise in rare-earth magnets as a Senior Scientist for Magnequench. As a Senior Applications Engineer for both Kane Magnetics and Energy Conversion Systems, Expert also did considerable work on the design, analysis and costing of ceramic ferrite permanent magnets and ferrite permanent-magnet motors.

Expert provided expert design, analysis and technical support to existing customers and new business opportunities. He performed magnetic circuit analysis using finite-element analysis (FEA) and analytical formulae to optimize performance and minimize cost of permanent magnet motors and sensors. He developed permanent magnet motors and generators, including 25kW and 100kW PM generators, and he designed permanent magnet motors and sensors as a value-added service to customers and to facilitate permanent magnet sales. Expert performed electromagnetic testing and expert failure analysis, also as a value-added customer service. He designed magnetization systems, performed design-to-cost studies for high-volume automotive and power tool customers, and provided initial gate review for all incoming magnet quotation requests, reporting directly to the VP of Sales. Expert determined costing for all quoted magnets and magnet assemblies, and he generated quotations to the customer. Expert gave tutorial presentations on magnetic materials and testing, magnetic circuit design, applications of magnetic materials, electric motors and generators at customer sites, industry trade shows and for the IEEE.

Expert provided expert design, analysis and technical support to existing customers and new business opportunities. He designed permanent magnet generators for wind turbine systems, and he performed technical & marketing studies to analyze and predict the demand for permanent magnet in various applications. Expert developed design strategies for replacing low-margin ferrite magnets with higher-margin bonded and sintered NdFeB in high-volume motor and sensor applications. These strategies have been successful in the power tool, appliance and automotive sectors. He performed magnetic circuit analysis, motor and sensor design, electromagnetic testing and expert failure analysis as a value added service to customers and to facilitate magnet sales. Expert set up the state-of-the-art magnet applications lab in the Magnequench Technology Center, featuring magnetic test fixtures, dynamometers, force and torque measurement systems, multimeters, oscilloscopes and coil winding machines. He wrote technical articles for automotive, appliance, motor and motion control industry trade magazines.

Expert was responsible for the design, analysis, and documentation of company's product lines: linear voice coil and moving magnet motors, DC brushless motors and drivers, magnetic bearings, clutches and brakes. He guided the technical growth of company from less than $2M (1989) to nearly $20M (1998) in sales with no increase in Engineering Department personnel. He authored two linear motor design patents which continue to generate $500k - $1M/year in income for BEI. Expert performed all of the company's finite element analysis and earned an average of $100k/year for BEI with design studies. He was the supervisor of 3 mechanical designers and 2 engineers in the Engineering Department, and he oversaw evolution of the company's computer network and engineering hardware and software tools (CAD, FEA, office network and applications). Expert specified and procured manufacturing and test equipment to allow company's growth and expansion, and he interfaced with customers and government agencies for proposals, technical reviews and quality assurance. He participated in strategic planning, quotations, scheduling, sales and marketing, and he wrote technical articles for motor/motion control industry trade magazines.

Expert worked under the guidance, supervision and tutelage of Dr. Karl Strnat (the “Father of Rare-Earth Permanent Magnets”) from his sophomore undergraduate year through completion of his MSEE degree. He performed computer-aided design and analysis of a wide variety of permanent magnet circuits as part of his MSEE thesis work under tutelage of Dr. Herbert Leupold (US Army ET&DL). Expert designed and analyzed several novel magnetic electron-beam-focusing circuits for use in klystrons, TWT's, wigglers, undulators and free-electron lasers. He participated in the development, fabrication and testing of various high-energy rare earth permanent magnet alloys in the world's foremost magnetics laboratory and computerized their laboratory test procedures.
