Expert is a bioinformatician with extensive international experience in computational and structural biology. With his formal training in molecular biophysics, he has over thirty years academic and industrial experience working at the interface of the mathematical and physical sciences and molecular biology. His early research contributions, in the field of structural biology, include the development of experimental and computational methods for macromolecular structure determination, including the solution of the first protein structure to be solved using synchrotron radiation techniques, now used a standard method in structural genomics. He also spent part of his career in industry, with Allelix Biopharmaceuticals, Oxford Molecular and GlaxoWellcome, where he played a leading role in the development of distributed object environments for the analysis, integration and visualization of bioinformatics data and was an early adopter of work flow languages for biocomputing applications. Since the mid-1990's, he has developed a productive research programme in the field of statistical
bioinformatics, which focuses on the application of state-of-the-art Bayesian methods emerging from the statistical machine learning community to a variety of problems in systems biology, functional genomics and proteomics. His recent work has included the use of state-space models to reverse engineer transcriptional networks from highly replicated gene expression microarray time series data, using statistically robust methods for model selection and parameter estimation; the application of nonparametric Bayesian techniques for solving clustering, feature selection and classification problems in bioinformatics data, and the development of hidden Markov and semi-Markov models for protein remote homolog recognition and secondary structure prediction. In the field of computational structural biology his current research focuses on the use of statistical machine learning and Bayesian computation to analyse protein energetics and the energy landscape of protein folding simulations.
