Research: At the University of Reading Expert led a team working on the diagnosis and control of Armillaria root rot of trees. Experience: His research has been reported in over 100 papers, most in refereed journals, several contributions to books and many patents and review articles. The publication of an internationally successful book on the Principles of Diagnostic Techniques in Plant Pathology for CAB International has been followed by two editions of a popular book on pests and diseases, The Gardener's Book of Pests and Diseases for BT Batsford and Armillaria root rot: Biology and Control (Intercept Publishers) that have also been sold internationally.

Training Research Students: 26 postgraduate students supervised for full-time research leading to a PhD and numerous undergraduates in thre Faculty of Life Sciences. As the Admissions Tutor and Course Director for the BSc Degree in Crop Protection, Expert was involved in course development for this well as being involved in other Departmental Degrees and have supervised field course visits.
