Expert has amassed over 25 years considerable research achievements and experience over a wide gamut of research interests but predominantly in the field of aerosol science and environmental chemistry. The research has encompassed the use of a wide variety of techniques and has also entailed extensive theoretical analyses of both experimental and computational data. He is author or coauthor of more than 200 papers, over 100 of which have been published in peer reviewed journals. He has participated in EUROTRAC and has recently collaborated in several Framework V and VI projects (NICE, CADENOX, SUB-AERO, URBAN-AERO, URBAN-EXPOSURE, NANOCAP). His research is funded through grants, contracts and studentships from Research Councils, industry and government departments. Expert is the past President of the Aerosol Society. Current research is centred in four main areas: physico-chemical properties of aerosols; indoor air quality and health impacts of aerosols; applied aerosol science; and environment – society interactions.

Was responsible for the maintenance, calibration and analysis of the output of various air pollution monitors, as well as making measurements of vertical ozone profiles, ambient hydrocarbon concentrations and deposition fluxes. The results of these measurements were used to assess the sources and sinks of photochemical ozone and to quantify the relative importance of chemical and physical removal processes.
