Since he started his career in science, Expert has been involved in projects that focus mainly on the characterisation of the function of specific proteins that are required in all the processes that involve nucleic acids in procaryotes and eucaryotes. To understand how the protein of interest worked, Expert used a wide array of molecular biology and genetic methods. He also focused his work on the understanding of the regulation of the enzymatic activities of the proteins of interest. Because of the nature of the proteins he studied, Expert developed a good expertise in studying both in vivo, in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and in vitro, using purified proteins and substrates, and conducting a challenging scientific project. Some of Expert's work has been published in high impact factor peer-reviewed journals. The quality of his work and his project definition skills were demonstrated by obtaining fellowships from international organisations such as EMBO or FEBS.
