Expert's expertise lies in epidemiology, tobacco control, public health and behavioral medicine. Current research interests focus on the detection of smoking-related diseases (cardiovascular and respiratory) in the population, exposure of smokers to smoking-related carcinogens, clinical trials of novel smoking cessation interventions (both pharmacological and behavioral), the use of smoking-related biomarkers to motivate smoking cessation, the development and impact of potential harm reduction strategies and public attitudes to tobacco policy. This work involves analysis of large data-sets and surveys, designing and conducting intervention studies as well as laboratory experimental studies. In addition, Expert has recently started to investigate neuro-degenerative disorders of learning and memory using electrophysiological methods to assess synaptic plasticity in transgenic mouse models of Alzheimers Disease.
