Expert received his M.D. from Emory University School of Medicine in 1995 and completed a three-year internal medicine residency at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals. He is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine and licensed to practice in the state of Georgia. He is also certified to provide Advance Cardiac Life Support and Basic Cardiac Life Support.

He developed and implemented a Microsoft Access application to manage the inpatient list of a hospitalist group at a hospital in Georgia in 2001. The application also helped in the collection and maintenance of billing data. He also worked with the Medical Information Services department at a hospital to pilot computerized physician medication order entry programs and accessing hospital information system using handheld computers.

He has served as a physician leader and managed a Continuous Quality Improvement team in an attempt to improve patient safety through improving the medication ordering process. He has also served as a member of the hospital's utilization management committee for nine years and its chairperson for two years.

Expert has particular interest in the use of information technology. He developed a Microsoft Access database to maintain and manage patient information for a hospitalist group. He also developed a Microsoft Access database to maintain and manage donor information for a large sperm bank.
