Expert, PhD is a behavioral scientist helping clients with issues related to brand image, consumer buying decisions, and consumer satisfaction and loyalty (they ARE distinctly different concepts). Bill has developed a unique model for customer segmentation (Fidelity) that uses behavioral science to understand and predict consumer behavior. This model is an invaluable tool in directing consumer purchasing behavior and encouraging brand loyalty. For over 20 years, Bill has helped his clients with survey research and analysis, and advanced statistics. Because of his training as a behavioral scientist, he places a premium on (1) human behavior, (2) the careful articulation of your research goals and (3) the choice of best analytic methods from a wide range of qualitative and quantitative methods. His approach assures that you will receive results that couple your needs with psychological insights and the best analytics. An expert in applied survey development, survey psychometrics and turning survey data into tangible working information, Expert has helped clients build marketing plans, branding campaigns, satisfaction and loyalty measures and segmentation profiles with significant gains in customer buying and loyalty. Whenever feasible, Bill seeks to provide tools back to his clients. One client for example received an Excel spreadsheet that could be used to predict the likelihood of long-term loyalty among its key staff. Bill has worked directly or indirectly (as a consultant to larger market research firms) for a wide variety of clients such as CVS pharmacy, Kraft, Serta, and Wrigleys and for smaller clients such as The Alliance (Employer Network), American Public Works Association, Geneva National Community Group, Credit Union Executives Society, Milwaukee Downtown BID #21, The Museum Store Association, Stratton Publishing and the National Funeral Directors Association among others. Why the client mix? Because behavioral science provides an understanding of human behavior that—to a significant extent—transcends B2B, B2C and business type. Bill's work in the health industry has included development and maintenance of systems for tracking statewide homicide and suicide rates and the use of control charts to advise appropriate corrective action (Expert's Firm), conceptual and analytic support for a national behavior change program, and the development of approaches to facilitate change in physician behavior. For the masochistic among you, below is a long, if partial, list of the various analyses Bill has conducted:
•ANOVA and T-tests
•CHAID
•Chi-Square method
•Cluster Analysis
•Conjoint/Discrete Choice
•Control charts
•Factor Analysis
•MARCOM
•Penalty Analysis
•Perceptual Mapping
•Psychometric survey analyses (reliability, validity, item analysis)
•Regression (multiple, bivariate analysis (logistic), multinomial, etc)
•ROC curves
•Structural equation modeling
•Survival
•TURF
•Z scores

| Selected Consulting Examples: |
-
Client: A large multinational client. This client was serving multiple industries with global operations when it requested a customer segmentation as part of a new product roll-out. A complex project, with many stakeholders, high expectations, and a tight timeline, Bill developed the survey methodology and performed the quantitative analysis that enabled the team to complete the project cost effectively and on time.
-
Client: A downtown business network. Over the years, Bill has conducted regular community surveys of awareness, brand perception and usage over a six-county area. The results of these benchmark surveys are used to develop business tactical plans each year. Again, Bill has been able to provide insights into population segments, which have served to guide a re-branding campaign by appealing to the segment types in promotional and advertising campaigns.
-
Client: A training organization. This client wanted to publish a white paper and a book based on a six-year project in which she collected qualitative data obtained from women of CEO-caliber. From a mass of nearly 500 surveys consisting predominantly of open-ended responses, data were analyzed using cutting-edge text analysis methods. Ultimately, the results of the obtained codings were included in quantitative analyses and presented at several professional meetings. Reponses to the findings have been enthusiastic and the client is currently working with an editor to publish the findings. Expert will be formally credited for his support to this project; both analytic and conceptual.
-
Client: A national association and a not-for-profit employer network. Working with a long-term client, Bill developed a methodology for tracking and segmenting member and nonmember behavior. This behavioral segmentation, The Fidelity Classification System™ was the foundation for all marketing communication efforts ultimately responsible for company top-line revenues. For the same client, Bill designed and conducted a study of unprecedented magnitude, which became known as Project 360. Project 360 laid the foundation for many of the activities that to this day engage the client including member services, member recruitments, product development and brand development and marketing communications. and served as a critical input into our long-range strategic planning process. As a continuation of that project, we are designing a segmentation tailored to help us help our members understand and manage health care costs and utilization.
-
Client: A large stategic branding company with international reach. On behalf of this client, Bill regularly provides analytic survey support for companies such as Kraft, Serta, Pyrex, Serta, Wrigleys. These consumer-packaged goods companies have a true appreciation for the value of customer segmentation. For each, Bill introduced complex analyses designed to segment customer populations and to understand the underlying motives, needs, satisfactions with various products—both new and established.

Bill has enhanced and applied models from behavior science to a host of other situations. As a social psychologist, he has a rich understanding of the evolutionary principles that undergird human tendencies, desires, motivations and ultimately our 'rationality'. The models Bill employs help to translate behavioral axioms into actionable, practical strategies for improving relationships, brand images, and human relations (whatever your entity).

Supplier and Vendor Location and Selection Behavioral science serves as the foundation of current thinking in many areas, including those as disparate as marketing and health. While not always evident to those in marketing or those working in human resources at a hospital, for Bill psychology and behavioral science are at the root of, and an essential element in facilitating superior insights into behaviors such as decision-making, behavior change and the like.
|
Other Skills and Services
Supporting his conceptual work, Bill has developed robust skills in statistical analysis. These analytic methods provide a much richer (read 'realistic') understanding of life circumstances. In effect, they do not over-simplify. At the same time, Expert is skilled at translating results of these analyses into layman's terms and at recommending sound strategy.
