Engineering at Colorado State University. He has designed high speed packaging machinery and can body and can lid forming machinery that ultimately became available to the industry. He has directly managed chemists, chemical, electrical, structural, mechanical, optics, corrosion engineers to the completion of complex multi-discipline projects ranging from beverage packaging systems to federally funded research programs on aircraft icing, airport security, satellite lubrication systems, mechanical systems reliability.
He has managed the engineering functions for a large scale glass container manufacturing and bottle filling plants. He has worked with consumer research firms to develop appealing consumer packaging for beverage products that were readily manufacturable and environmentally sustainable. Led team to select glass container melting and forming technologies for a major glass plant rebuild.
Designed low cost metal efficient beverage containers whose total manufactured volume is greater than 400 billion units which have been filled by Coors, Anheuser-Busch, Coke and Pepsi. Cumulatively, the designs represented greater performance and lower cost than competitive designs saving customers millions of dollars in metal costs while providing fillers and consumers improved performance as measured by consumer complaint data. Selected and specified from commercially available glass, folding carton, label, closure, carton supplies, the package components used for the national rollouts of Coors Light and Killians. Researched plastic closures and containers for oxygen sensitive beverages as well as the manufacturing processes and costs. Researched the compatibility of hard to hold and retorted beverages with aluminum containers and internal coating system. Researched the factors contributing to rapid loss of beverage carbonation and gushing complaints by consumers.
He has researched beverage active package structures including oxygen absorbers. He specified the materials and developed the supply chain to support the national rollouts of Coors Light and Killians including primary package, closures, labels, folding cartons, carriers, corrugated, slip pallets. Developed light weight and strong aluminum beverage can designs. Assisted with the development of aluminum bottle manufacturing technologies.
He has designed components of bottle and aluminum can filling lines beverage filling lines (uncaser, packer, custom conveyors), 60 inch wide plastic slip pallet manufacturing line, contributed to the design of can and lid forming machinery (bodymaker, trimmer, necker, sequential forming dies).
