circuit design expert
electronic circuit design expert
digital evidence expert |
The circuit design approach that the expert uses begins with a system level point of view. He develops a detailed specification for circuit requirements in the context of the over all product. This allows him to optimize its partition among analog, digital and micro controller elements. This always results in a low cost (both in terms of components and assembly and test) and ultra reliable and reproducible design. His designs typically include a mix of op amps, gate arrays, microcontrollers, transistors and optoelectronic devices which provide an optimum combination of cost, reliability and performance. His broad range of design skills allows him to quickly review and improve existing designs. |
|
electronic display instrument design review expert |
Over the years he has been called in to review products and projects that cover a vast area of technologies. Typically the assignment came from the board of directors, CEO or venture capitalists associated with the company. The reasons he has been asked to do evaluations include: 1. Suitability for purpose
2. Design review prior to prototype fabrication
3. Find and fix product problems
4. Enhance reliability
5. Improve ease of manufacture The list of products and technologies he has reviewed and modified include: 1. Nuclear Gamma Camera
2. P-H Meters
3. Programmable controllers
4. Machine Vision
5. Hand held computers
6. High speed DNA Sequencer
7. Document scanner
8. Facsimile transmitter/receiver
9. Scan converters
10. Hand held measurement tools
11. ZigBee communications
12. High power I/O modules
13. Modems
14. Laser scanners
15. CCD scanners
16. Automotive subassembly testers
17. Videoconferencing systems
18. Image processing integrated circuits
19. Pressure transducers
20. Servo systems
21. Wafer handling robots In most cases he was retained after the initial consult to implement and oversee the changes. Mostly this was accomplished with in house personnel under his direction and technical assistance. Some of his clients included: 1. IBM
2. Exxon (now Exxon Mobile)
3. Various divisions of Gould
4. Corning
5. Raytheon
6. Helicos Biosciences
7. The L.S. Starrett Company
8. Various divisions of EG&G
9. AT&T Microelectronics
10. Howe Richardson Scale Company
11. Gateway Computer
12. Cognex
13. FastFax (Merged)
14. Termiflex (Sold)
15. Imagitex (bought by Dupont)
16. Proconix (bought) For the most part these situations required expertise across a broad range of technologies which is what he brings to the table. He has always been able to assess the situation within a day or so and come up with a plan of action within a week. Often times he has been able to corrected major problems within the first day of review.

|
optoelectronic circuit expert |
He has designed many optoelectronic circuits using photodiodes, phototransistors, lasers (both gas and semiconductor) Photomultipliers and CCDs. These circuits went into a wide array of products from facsimile machines to biomedical instruments. Recently he was called in to review the electronic design of a biotech instrument. During the review he discovered that the optoelectronics designed to measure presence/absence in a small diameter tube would not be viable in production. He redesigned the optics path and the resultant design, which worked extremely well, was novel enough such that the client asked him to write up a patent application. This entire process took under two weeks. |

Publications and Patents
He has 3 patents. Developed product for Starrett Advanced Technology Division
|
Called in to evaluate a handheld design for a time accounting company by the CEO. He thought the design was flawed. His diagnosis of the design was great but it wasn't a useful product. Expert produced a new architecture and product family which lasted for over 10 years and created nearly $1B in revenue.
|
Called in to redesign an old computer interface product for handheld machine tools (micrometers, calipers etc.). Instead convinced management to design a wireless version. Developed the complete product and they are now the leader in this market segment, taking away the crown from an old seemingly unbeatable competitor.
|
Called in to assist a specialized video camera company with developing a product for a potentially huge customer. Advised against the deal as the customer's needs could never be met by the technology. CEO of company credits expert with saving his company from bankruptcy by avoiding the deal.
