Consulting Services:
He consulted with citrus farmers in 2007 to assess frost damage, caused by low night time air temperatures, by using near infrared IKONOS satellite imagery to evaluate plant stress. The 1-meter spatial resolution imagery can detect every tree in an orchard. He was able to work with farmers to see influences in plant health by wind machines used to circulate cold air masses blowing across the orchards.

He consulted with Arizona vegetable farmers in 2006 to identify plant stress, caused by plant nutrient deficiencies, by analyzing high resolution aerial photography in a Geographic Information System. The images were able to detect significant differences in plant growth in lettuce, spinach, parsley, onions and kale that were confirmed with laboratory samples of fertility levels in plant tissue from good areas versus weak areas in the fields.

He consulted with asparagus farmers in 2005 to identify weak areas in fields by using QuickBird satellite imagery. He started a research project that used a decision support system developed by the New Zealand Institute for Crop & Food Research to monitor root carbohydrate levels in asparagus samples from weak areas for comparison with areas of strong plant growth. The farmer altered his drip irrigation system to bring additional water to the stressed areas identified in the imagery.

As an independent research coordinator, he established relations with, to enhance and to procure, the best available researchers for projects of importance to the tomato industry. When he started in 1999, all research work was performed through the University of California. He was able to bring expert researchers in from Cornell University, Brigham Young University, Oregon State University, the University of Arkansas, and the USDA facility in Salinas, CA for work on tomato genetics and plant breeding. The US EPA honored the tomato industry research work with a Champion Award for Reduced Risk presented to Expert in 2003.

As a Certified Professional Agronomist, he has been consulting with organic farmers who do not rely upon conventional fertlizers or man-made pesticides to bring certified organically grown produce to the market place.
