Blending of different types of elastomers is an area that Expert has been involved in since he began his industrial career with Gencorp (formerly General Tires and Rubber Co., an Akron, Ohio-based company), followed by BF Goodrich, and most currently, Fulflex Co. Blending is essential in order to achieve the desired combination of rheological and mechanical properties that are specific for a given application. He is an inventor and co-inventor of a number of patents that are based on blends of elastomers. In his most recent post as Managing Director & Chief Operating Officer, Expert was actively involved in providing inputs to the Director of Technology regarding the development of new and improved product formulations that require blending of natural rubber and suitable polymers to achieve high elongation, acceptable tensile strength, and optimal hysteresis.

All of Expert's 33 years of industrial experience have been related to products that exhibit rubbery behavior. Hence, the selection of an elastomer and/or blend of elastomers and rubber becomes an essential part of his career. The actual end-use conditions dictate the choice of elastomer or blends. For example, if weather resistance is of foremost important, the suitable choice will be unsaturated elastomer such as EPDM or hypalon. If high strength and hysteresis at high elongation are important, the suitable choice will be natural rubber. Often times, blending is necessary in order to satisfy both processing needs and end-use performance criteria. |
