Expert states that Adobe Photoshop is a powerful tool for editing digital images from all sources. He uses it not only for editing digital photographs and scanned images, but also for images captured from other sources, such as frame grabbers and video stills. He uses Photoshop for color adjustment, color management, developing print test patterns, and generation of dithering patterns. He has published numerous papers describing this work and teaches Photoshop in his classes.

Expert is part of a large effort at Expert's University to develop barrier coatings for paper and paperboard for protection against gas and moisture intrusion. These are primarily aimed at food and drug packaging and related items. The approach at the University has been three pronged: 1. Nano pigments to reduce permeability; 2. Biopolymer film-formers to improve recyclability and biodegradability; and 3. Fluorochemicals to reduce surface energy. His group has published several papers in this area and others are in preparation.

Expert is part of a large effort at Expert's University to develop paper coating formulations and application methods for barrier properties (please see the paragraph directly above) and/or printing. His group has developed coatings for inkjet, offset lithography, flexography and rotogravure printing. They have employed conventional coating methods, such as rod, blade and size press, as well as unconventional ones such as curtain coating and impregnation. For example, ink jet coatings employ nanoscale silica and alumina pigments and their blends with other pigments to achieve gloss and high print density.

Expert has worked in colloid and surface chemistry for over 30 years. This has ranged from molecular theories of surfaces and interfaces to surfactants and polymers for enhanced oil recovery and to coating and ink formulations for printing. He teaches the University's department graduate course in Colloid and Surface Chemistry and is currently directing a postdoctoral student who is studying ink and substrate interaction for ink jet printing. This involves measurements of surface and interfacial tensions and contact angles. He has published numerous papers in this area and others are in preparation.

Expert has worked with digital data collection and analysis for over 20 years. His work has ranged for data analysis and curve fitting to image capture and analysis and to digital video capture and editing. He has worked with frame grabbers, scan converters, digital scanners, and digital cameras. He has also worked with color management and profile generation for scanners and digital cameras. Expert has published several papers in this area.

|
|
Expert came to Expert's University specifically to introduce digital printing to the existing printing/imaging program. Expert's research has ranged from coatings for digital printing to ink formulations for digital printing and has included printability analysis of digital printing, in particular color management and image analysis. He teaches digital printing at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has published numerous articles on these topics and others are in process.

Expert has recently begun research on electrically conducting polymers, primarily for use in printed electronics. The immediate application is printed RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags in line for decorative and label printing. He is currently investigating conducting polymers in blends with natural polymers, such a lignin, a papermaking by product, and possibly with nano-sized metallic particles for printing RFID antennas and chips. He has also been investigating substrate issues for printed electronics. He has two papers that will be presented at conferences in September, 2005 and others are planned.

|
Expert notes that electrophotography is the most prevalent digital printing process in use today. Expert currently works with laser printer characterization using color management and image analysis, high volume color printing, and variable data printing, using a digital color press. He spends significant time on electrophotography in both undergraduate and graduate courses. He has published several papers in this area and others are being planned.

Expert worked for 12 years with Phillips Petroleum Company developing polymers and surfactants for enhanced oil recovery. This included interpretation in terms of phase transitions and critical phenomena and polymer rheology. He has published numerous papers in this area. Expert notes that these topics are of renewed interest with current high energy prices.

|
Expert worked on the theory of the glass transition in polymers, along with associated hydrodynamic and light scattering properties while a postdoctoral fellow with Julian Gibbs at Brown University. He published three papers with Drs. Gibbs and Ed DiMarzio, who shared the high polymer physics prize from the American Physical Society for their theory of the glass transition.

Expert has worked on industrially funded projects for ink-jet printing of nonaqueous electrolytes, non-paper substrates, printability on specially coated papers, and ink formulations for digital printing. He is currently investigating ink/substrate interactions and surface chemistry for different ink-jet ink formulations. In addition he is formulating hot melt inks for printing three-dimensional structures using hot melt ink jet printers. Ink-jet printing is a prominent part of undergraduate and graduate courses that Expert teaches on digital printing (please see his paragraph on digital printing). Expert has published several papers relating to ink-jet printing.

|
Expert has been working on molecular-based and flow-based simulations of paper and coating structures for over 13 years. He has developed methods for direct surface energy calculations from molecular interaction parameter along with associated molecular confirmation. Expert has published several papers in this area and others are in process.
