Expert notes that fine chemical production has a need for high quality products at an acceptable cost. By developing catalyst system that can impact both selectivity, and manage waste generation and utilizing his extensive skills in process development, Expert has often taken a fine chemical with marginal or negative value to the winner's circle.

Expert notes that in industrial chemistry, whether involving bulk chemicals, fine chemicals or crop protection chemicals, one is always concerned with purity, waste management, safety, and cost. By utilizing his extensive experience in catalysis and process optimization, Expert has caused many new and existing products to have a significant bottom line impact.

Expert notes that agricultural chemical production requires the development of a clean, safe, economical process at a very rapid pace. Once one has discovered a promising chemical, one must submit it for extensive and expensive testing. Any change in the process used to generate this chemical might require repeat testing. Expert' expertise in catalyst and process optimization has often led to a clean, safe, economical, and fully optimized process in a very short time. Expert was involved with several commercial processes, some patented, to perform selective heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation of intermediates to agricultural chemicals. These minimized side product formation and gave high yield at minimum cost.

Expert is a recognized expert in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. He has over 20 patents, most of which involve commercial processes in the use of heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation and sold acid catalysis. He served as a corporate consultant to Crompton Corporation for the majority of his career. Additionally, Expert was extremely active in the field outside the company working with all major catalyst vendors in developing optimized catalysts and in serving on the Executive Committee of the Organic Reactions Catalysis Society for 18 years, where he edited the proceedings of the 16th conference, which he chaired.

Expert was involved with optimization of several processes involving alkene hydrogenation; most notably, he led process development efforts involving hydrogenation of poly alpha olefins dealing with reaching high levels of saturation, and dehalogenation at minimum cost.
Expert' application of organic chemistry, and most specifically heterogeneous catalysis, led to many process improvements of high bottom-line impact. Patents were obtained on many of these improvements. The processes he improved involved both batch and continuous processes at high pressure. They often involved working closely with catalyst vendors to develop economical catalysts of high specificity.

Expert' work with ketone hydrogenation involved both the production of alcohols and the prevention of ketone hydrogenation in reductive alkylation reactions.
Expert' work involved commercial process using solid acid catalysts to perform selective alkylation reactions. He also performed a great body of work on reductive alkylation reactions. In both of these fields he achieved substantial bottom line impact.
