Expert obtained a Ph.D. in wood chemistry from Irv Goldstein at NCSU in 1981, and is currently a Professor of Forest Products, and Adjunct Professor of Chemistry, at Expert's University. In the past 24 years he has worked on numerous projects in wood chemistry, principally lignin and extractive chemistry. He has co-organized two symposia in the areas of biomass conversion and lignin chemistry, and co-edited two books on these topics.

Expert and Dr. Darrel Nicholas have worked together for a number of years on developing environmentally-benign totally-organic and copper-organic biocide wood preservatives using several approaches: non-biocidal additives to enhance the efficacy of organic biocides; synergistic biocide mixtures which can be used in wood preservation and outdoor efficacy studies of these systems; and the leaching and biodegradation of wood preservatives. Based on their joint efforts he and Dr. Nicholas have been awarded five U.S. patents, and several companies are looking at possible commercialization of their patented antioxidant/organic biocide synergism concept. He and Dr. Nicholas are also trying to develop additives to improve the dimensional stability of lumber. Tor, Dr. Nicholas, and other scientists have co-organized one symposium on the fundamental chemistry of wood deterioration and preservation, and co-edited the associated book. They are also co-organizing another applied symposium on how to develop a new wood preservative, and molds in homes, with a book tentatively accepted.
