Summary of Expertise:
Listed with other top experts in: |
Expert has designed power supplies for over 20 years. He has designed flyback, forward, and sepic topologies for ac/dc and dc applications with power levels from a few watts to over 2KW. Expert notes that power supply design involves knowing feedback systems, amplifier design, instrumentation and electronic devices. He has incorporated this knowledge in developing a defibrillator, ultra-sonic test equipment, an FM transmitter, and audio circuits.
For ultrasonic test equipment, Expert designed a low noise, high gain amplifier. With attenuators, gain could be controlled from -40db to 80db.
All designs are prototyped by Expert. He tests all designs and compares the results with his design calculations. This guarantees all designs meet the requirements specified by the client.

| Selected Consulting Examples: |
-
A startup was developing a low cost defibrillator which they could not make work. Expert determined the problem and finished developing the project.
-
A processor would hang randomly during operation. Expert determined the problem was grounded between the power supply and processor board. The fix was simply improving the grounding between the two boards.
-
A small company developed a dc/dc converter from a particular vendor by using the application note. Some of the converters would fail after being turned on a few times. Expert determined the problem was the vendor's gate drive IC. During narrow pulse widths at turn on, the driver sometimes did not turn off the FET, causing it to fail. The manager confronted the vendor and they admitted they knew about the problem, and had just starting sampling a replacement driver.
-
An alarm company had a power supply that was a problem in manufacturing. The power supply had been designed outside. Expert showed the manager that the design was not well thought out. He modified the design, removing a number of components and reworking the board. The company found the reworked board solved the problems. Expert helped re-layout and test the new board.
-
A dc/dc power supply was needed for a scanning electron microscope. The input was 24V and the output had to be 400V with 13KV isolation. Expert designed a simple power supply that met these requirements.
