Expert has been at the New York State College of Ceramics for more than 30 years and is now "Krusen Distinguished Professor of Glass Science. His teaching has included "Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Materials", Surface Properties of Glass, Introduction to Glass Science, Phase Diagrams, Diffusion in Solids, Introduction to Metallurgy, Secondary Glass Processing and others. His research has led to eight patents, and more than 100 technical publications. His research areas include the effect of composition and processing variables on fiber properties; sol-gel glasses, gas-phase surface treatments for improved chemical durability and strength; ion-exchange strengthening; silver- and gold-based photosensitive glasses, glass-ceramics, Bioglass® and other bio-active glasses; micro-porous and nano-porous glasses; glazes and glaze composition development; glaze defects; and chalcogenide glasses. Expert specializes in the development of new glass compositions with properties specific to a particular use. Products developed range from fibers for asbestos replacement, low-temperature sealing glass for electronic applications, bio-resorbable glasses for medical and environmental applications. He has consulted for several international glass companies.

Expert has developed compositions and processes for coatings and fibers via sol-gel processing. Compositions include silicates, zirconates, aluminates, and multicomponent sols.

|
Expert has extensive experience in the production and properties of micro-porous and nano-porous glass, primarily in the borosilicate system, and in sol-gel methods of producing porous glass. He is also familiar with techniques suitable for porous ceramic products.
|
|
|
Much of Expert's recent work has focused on glass fiber formation and properties. Fiber types include bioresorbable fibers (phosphates and phosphorous oxynitrides), infrared optical fibers and sensors (chalcogenides). Other recent work has been in processing and compositional influences on fiber forming and methods of characterizing these effects, and fibers for biomedical applications including "Bioglass®" and the resorbable phosphate based glasses mentioned above.
