Expert is highly experienced in failure analysis, especially fastener related failure analysis. He is very knowledgeable in the variety characteristics and properties that comprise a complete fracture analysis of fasteners. It is his intention not only to identify why a part broke, but also to prevent its reoccurrence. He specializes in fasteners, which tend to be unique in their specific applications. Expert notes that a thorough examination of the broken part and its mating components, the specification requirements, and process parameters are all involved in determining root cause and developing a strategy for prevention. He has developed training modules to teach the basics of fracture analysis and hydrogen embrittlement.

Expert is actively involved in several consensus standards writing organizations. The committees include: ASTM F16, Committee on Fasteners; ASTM F07, Aerospace and Aircraft; ASTM B08, Metallic and Inorganic Coatings; ASTM E28, Mechanical Testing; ASME B18 Fastener Committee (includes the ISO Technical Advisory Group for the U.S.); SAE Fastener Committee; and the Industrial Fasteners Institute technical committees. He has also been a member of ASM International since 1977. In addition, he has developed training modules to explain the importance of standards and the requirements of the U.S. Fastener Quality Act.

Expert is recognized for his comprehension of the ferrous heat treatment processes. He has written detailed procurement specifications for a world-class continuous mesh belt heat treatment processing line. He then helped his client review the bids from several furnace manufacturers around the world in order to make an informed decision on the purchase. His experience in the mechanical testing of heat-treated fasteners as well as the evaluation of microstructures is extensive. In addition, Expert has developed training modules that effectively teach the basic concepts of heat treatment and fastener testing.

Expert is a specialist in ferrous metallurgy. He is experienced in raw material quality assurance and selection for fasteners. He has written raw material quality standards for global manufacturers, and as a part of consensus standards writing organizations. Most of his experience is with carbon and low alloy steels and various types of stainless steel, especially those used for manufacturing mechanical fasteners and other related components. He understands the properties that are necessary to enhance cold formability. In addition, he has developed training modules to teach the basics to those whose jobs would be enhanced by a greater appreciation of the metallurgical aspects of fastener manufacturing and quality.

From his start as a fastener laboratory technician, to over 25 years of supervisory experience, Expert understands what it takes to design, plan, staff, and manage a laboratory. He accomplished preparing for and achieving accreditation for the corporate lab he managed, and, at the same time, he helped over a dozen other manufacturing facility labs prepare for their lab accreditation. He is able to assist in the writing of manuals, procedures, test methods, and other documentation requirements to help a laboratory prepare for accreditation, including that which is required for lab safety and chemical hygiene. In addition, he has developed training modules to assist in lab management, safety, and chemical hygiene.

Expert is especially interested in helping the fastener industry prevent hydrogen embrittlement. He has been involved in the development and writing of two ASTM standards that make significant strides in accomplishing this. ASTM F1624 and F1940 define a test method and a way to incorporate that test method into a standard that provides fastener manufacturers and those who plate high strength fasteners with a process control verification tool that can prevent internal hydrogen embrittlement. In addition, he has prepared training modules to explain the concepts involved in hydrogen embrittlement avoidance and fastener coatings.
