eavesdropping detection expert
competitive intelligence countermeasures expert
corporate espionage expert
counterespionage expert |
Expert specializes in detecting the espionage crimes of eavesdropping, wiretapping, video voyeurism, and corporate espionage. Expert notes that spies collect intelligence—quietly—before they use it; they size up the target; evaluate the probability of success; then steal information to fuel their goals. An eavesdrop/wiretap is a key component of pre-attack intelligence gathering. Eavesdropping is the one early-warning sign of spying that can be detected. When an eavesdropper is detected, the attack can still be thwarted. Proactive eavesdropping detection is cheap insurance. Expert's specialty for over 25 years has been eavesdropping detection, sometimes known as technical surveillance countermeasures (TSCM). He also has extensive experience in conducting corporate investigations and has numerous electronic surveillance detection innovations to his credit. His firm, Expert Associates, is the largest private-sector provider of eavesdropping detection and counterespionage consulting services to corporations and government agencies. Expert Associates is "independent": it has no secret affiliations with manufacturers, has no gadgets to sell, and no commissions are accepted. Information protection recommendations are based solely on the client's best interest, and the service is confidential. Inspections to detect electronic surveillance--bugs, taps, and cameras--are now a commonly accepted business practice. During inspections, Expert and his team consider all information security vulnerabilities: locks, alarms, sensitive wastepaper disposal, computers, and information security policies and procedures. Their unique overview approach assures that problems get solved and concerns about future privacy are resolved. Inspections can be conveniently scheduled during non-business hours. A layered non-destructive testing approach assures inspections are thorough and expedient. This is Expert's specialty, and the focus of his firm's services. Expert is an advisor to the Espionage Research Institute. He holds professional certifications from ASIS, the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, and the American Board of Forensic Examiners. His chapters on eavesdropping detection and counterespionage appear in several textbooks. He is credited with pioneering the development of Radio Reconnaissance Spectrum Analysis, and Thermal Emissions Spectrum Analysis - innovative detection techniques. He is also the course author and instructor of "Electronic Eavesdropping & Business Espionage Countermeasures" presented at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. |

-
In a company president's office, a wireless surveillance camera was broadcasting picture and sound a distance of approximately 300 feet. Employees in an adjacent building always seemed to know about executive decisions before they were formally announced. The camera was built into an item normally seen on the credenza. Expert's company located the camera and the problem was solved.
-
In a Fortune 100 company's corporate headquarters, Expert Associates caught a group of foreign nationals actively engaged in a spy mission - in their client's headquarters. Expert Associates' investigator monitored their bugging transmissions; watched them video tape; listened to them dictate paperwork they saw, ask employees probing questions, and describe the sights while going about their business. They never knew the Expert technical investigator was there. The client had been diligent over the years in conducting proactive inspections. This day it paid off. Their representatives watched and listened as well, not realizing just how rare an event a live spy catch is. How rare is rare? Expert describes it this way: Only a few athletes ever play in the Olympics; even fewer win gold medals. Similarly, most counterespionage practitioners will never have a live catch (this craft's equivalent of the gold medal). This is partially due to circumstance. However, training, experience, proper equipment, and preparedness are factors, too. Expert and his team have been fortunate to have three live catches during their firm's history.
-
At a large importer of consumer appliances, visiting product vendors were able to eavesdrop from the parking lot on strategic client discussions before, during, and after meetings with them. Expert Associates' technical investigators detected and located a wireless surveillance camera broadcasting both picture and sound a distance of approximately 300 feet. The camera and microphone were built into an item normally seen on the display shelf in the Sales Conference Room.
-
At the headquarters of a religious broadcaster, an ousted televangelist was publicly accused by his successors of eavesdropping. They claim he used an eavesdropping system that Expert Associates discovered during an inspection for bugs that he might have left behind. The truth was that the system was actually being used by opposition employees to eavesdrop on their former leader. The FBI reviewed Expert Associates' report. No charges were brought against the former leader, and no charges were brought against the current leadership either.
