Expert has more than 14 years of international experience as a researcher in the areas of endocrinology, biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics. He earned his Ph.D. in 1991 from the University of Nijmegen in The Netherlands working on the regulation of gene expression of Proopiomelanocortin (POMC) and the neuroendocrine protein, 7B2.
Expert has created several cell lines overproducing the mammalian pro-protein processing enzyme furin, with highly improved processing capacity for the production of recombinant proteins that require maturation at pairs of basic amino acids and have to be produced in mammalian cells. He has extensive research experience in the area of regulation of gene expression. He has cloned the promoter regions of many genes and has extensively characterized regulatory regions responsible for the regulation of the expression of genes using a large repertoire of assays including promoter truncations, reporter assays and transfection studies in a wide variety of cell lines using all current transfection procedures.
Expert has deep experience in the analysis of gene expression. He has extensive experience with Northern blot procedures (both formaldehyde and glyoxal-based methods) and has extensive experience with RNA isolation procedures. In addition, he has extensive experience with Western blot analysis to characterize protein expression using both colorimetric and chemical luminescence detection systems. Expert has in-dept experience in DNA amplification, cloning, site directed mutagenesis, and sequencing as well as many bioinformatics tools to characterise genes.

Science Advisor

Currently, Expert works as science advisor for The Expert's Firm (VIB). The VIB is an academic institute with a budget of about USD$60 million, employing over 750 people, working in several areas of molecular biology, plant and human genetics, cell biology, immunology, cancer and neurodegeneration. The institute publishes about 300 publications per year in peer-reviewed journals, of which about 10% are in high-ranking journals (impact factor higher than 10). As a science advisor for the VIB, Expert has to stay abreast of all the science performed within the VIB and in related fields. He also has to stay abreast of the developments in the biotechnology industry and keep track of technological innovations, especially in the areas of functional genomics and bioinformatics. His job enables him to work on many scientific disciplines at a complex level, as he has to give advice on scientific matters but also on technology transfer matters.
