human reliability expert |
Expert and his firm, Expert's Firm, provide engineering, consulting and training services for reliability of design of systems using stochastic processes. Expert has worked with reliability and maintainability, managing and performing R&M program tasks for a wide variety of industries. A trusted problem solver in reliability design for two decades, Expert notes that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Reliability analysis seeks to expose such weaknesses for correction resulting in a more robust system design that will improve product/service life cycle costs. Stochastic processes are statistical analyses used to predict system performance for a certain period of time under stated conditions. |

aerospace engineering expert
system reliability expert
failure modes and effects analysis expert |
Systems reliability engineering is responsible for providing expertise based on the physics of failure of components, parts and systems. Expert has acted as principal engineer/scientist on many aerospace engineering projects that required a study of systems and subsystems reliability. One such project is his work on the Space Shuttle External Tank Production Readiness Team where Expert analyzed production facilities used in the construction of the SST External Tanks (ETs) for the Space Shuttle, prior to and post first flight of shuttle Columbia. The analysis techniques he employed were Failure Modes and Effects with Criticality Assessment (FMECA) for each production subsystem and systems. Other projects he's made major contributions to include the International Space Station Electronic Controls and Navigation System, Helium-Neon Gas Laser Inertial Reference System, MX Missile Launch Facilities Upgrade, Naval Engine Control System Design, and GOES Weather Satellite Systems Worst Case Analysis. |

fault tree analysis expert
aircraft safety expert |
Expert provided reliability-maintainability engineering and analyses of the FAA's VSCS (Voice Switching and Control System) program, which included electronic voice and data communications systems provided by a large telecommunications company during the design evaluations phase. He was an advisor to design engineering in reliability optimization techniques and maintainability analyses, for MTTR (Mean Time To Repair) calculations, BIT/BITE (Built-In-Test/Built-In-Test-Equipment) effectiveness, task-time studies, fault tree analysis, sneak circuit and parts applications and processes. |
|
electric utility electric power distribution expert |
Expert was engaged as a systems engineer in field studies related to the application of data communications signals sent over the electric power transmission systems of various electric power companies around the continental USA and Canada. The project effort was focused on the implementation of controls and remote monitoring of household HVAC and water heaters. The study included aerial and underground grid cabling, transformers, and capacitors sizing and implementation for coherent communications through substations to the central data communications facilities. Expert worked with several leading electric power utility companies located on the West Coast, Midwest, Northeast and Southeast USA and Canada. |
|
electronic fault diagnosis expert |
Expert understands that fault diagnostics are critical to the operation of complex telecommunications equipment systems. By applying BIT/BITE effectiveness techniques to these systems and others, the durability of the system can readily be seen and effective measures employed to ensure high availability of these systems. Expert has seen first-hand that accurate fault diagnosis leads to rapid fault isolation and ultimately shorter Mean Times To Repair, thus improving maintainability of your systems. BIT (Built-in-Test) refers to the onboard diagnostic software that enables rapid deployment of redundant systems that ensure high systems availability; BITE (Built-In-Test-Equipment) is the hardware/firmware equivalent to BIT, but does not deploy redundant backup systems. Instead, it is charged with alerting operating personnel of system faults that may require immediate attention. |
|
electronics design engineering expert
electronics manufacturing expert |
As a systems engineer and reliability consultant, Expert has worked in electronic engineering for over 20 years and has been involved in electronics equipment design and test at various levels during design and development phases. He worked for 12 years as an electronics technician in avionics, radar and long distance telecommunications systems that included microwave, broadband radio, and copper cable systems. Expert helped build from the ground up, by providing design layout of a large intertoll telecommunications switching and transmission facility. |
|
semiconductor cluster-tooling processing expert |
As Senior Systems Reliability Consultant to a large semiconductor equipment manufacturer of cluster tools, Expert analyzed for reliability an eight-port cluster tool, utilizing reliability prediction and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) methodologies and techniques. The analysis explored the wafer handling system and the interconnection of wafer processing modules and cassettes. |
|
spacecraft expert |
In reliability, Expert believes the engineer must have first-hand knowledge of the physics of failure of components and parts, as well as the operating environments pertaining to the application of system designs. As Systems Reliability Engineer to a leading aerospace manufacturer responsible for the design and construction of the External Tank for the space shuttles (as part of the Space Transportation System deployed over the next twenty years), Expert became a quick study of space environments. This enabled him to make correct judgments during and after his failure modes analyses of the various production tools and facilities responsible for the many phases of construction and assembly required to build the massive External Tank that the Space Shuttle mounts to and ultimately is fueled by. Therefore, Expert acknowledges, high reliability is required on the ground during assembly to prevent production downtime, and assembly and final mounting of the aerospace hardware that becomes the Space Transportation System. |
|
telecommunication expert |
Expert possesses a thorough knowledge of telecommunications systems as a result of ten years working for the number one telecommunications long distance carrier prior to the breakup of AT&T. He learned every aspect of telecommunications interconnection within the central offices – trunking and intertoll, private line and inter-office interconnection hierarchy. His responsibilities included facilitation of orders through installation and test during 24/7 operations.
He became a key man in the design, development and installation of new intertoll facilities in a major Northeastern city, utilizing the talents and coordination skills he'd learned from previous assignments that facilitated on-time delivery of plant operations. |
|
network reliability expert |
Expert has conducted expert analysis of network reliability for telecommunications and electric power industries. He analyzed public and private telecommunications for reliability-availability-maintainability utilizing CAE software and RBD modeling to achieve high availability goals of 7 x 9s (0.9999999) on Air Traffic Control System Communications, and also Electric Power Utility Grids. |

Training/Seminars
Expert has been a Naval Postgraduate School visiting professor, and has been invited back for repeat engagements. He delivered a 45-minute discussion of how to organize an effective reliability program, one that includes failure reporting, analysis, and a corrective action system that incorporates root cause laboratory analysis. His seminar includes a slide presentation of key issues. In his training, Expert underscores the fact that while all engineering products and processes need to have reliability designed into them to minimize or mitigate failure, the very nature of some products and processes necessitate that reliability engineering – in the form of reliability prediction and reliability analysis – be integral to the design process at all levels.

Supplier and Vendor Location and Selection A client of Expert's who is a telecommunications manufacturer had a unique high incidence of unexplainable failures in their electronic switching systems. Combining data analysis techniques with reliability methods, Expert uncovered handling problems in manufacturing that caused DOAs. The defects were a result of ESD (electrostatic discharge) to sensitive MOS components resulting from improper handling techniques. Vendor interviews and cooperation enabled speedy establishment of ESD protection methods, saving the client millions of dollars in re-work production costs.
