With seventeen years experience as a Professor of Medical Microbiology, Expert specializes in bacterial exotoxins and adherence to host tissues. He is particularly knowledgeable in pathogens of the gastrointestinal tract, especially the enterovirulent group of E. coli, Salmonellae, Shigellae and Campylobacter species.

His most recent accomplishments include the development of potential carbohydrate-based drugs for E. coli O157 and Clostridium difficile, the organism involved in antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Both these drugs are in the advanced phases of clinical trials.

As an expert in gastrointestinal diseases, Expert has been involved in reviewing research grant proposals for national and international agencies and he currently participates on the editorial boards of two peer-review scientific journals. Expert also instructs undergraduate and graduate students in the Faculties of Medicine, Medical Laboratory Science and Science at the Expert's University.

|
Expert is responsible for teaching principles of microbial pathogenicity to junior and senior undergraduate university students. He teaches students in the Faculties of Science, Medicine and Medical Laboratory Sciences. He is also responsible for supervising graduate student research projects at the MSc and PhD levels. He supervises the activities of technologists and the day-to-day operations of an advanced medical microbiology basic research laboratory. He performs applied research in the development of novel anti-infective drugs and vaccine preparations. Additionally, Expert is a consultant to the biotechnology industry.

Professional Appointments
He has served on the Editorial Board of Infection and Immunity since 1993, is a Section Editor for the Canadian Journal of Microbiology (since 1997), and has been Secretary/Treasurer of the Canadian Society of Microbiologists since 1997. Expert is a member of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research Postdoctoral Fellowship Review Panel and has served for two years on the American Institute for Biological Sciences Military Infectious Diseases Research Program Review Panel. He has also served on the Microbiology and Immunology Grant Review Panel for the Medical Research Council of Canada and is an ad hoc reviewer for the NSERC in Canada, the British Columbia Medical Research Foundation and the NSF in the USA.

Awards/Recognition
Expert was the recipient of an Ontario Graduate Studentship in 1976, a Charles H. Best Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship in 1981 and an Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research Postdoctoral Fellowship in 1981. Canadian and American radio and television have interviewed Expert discussing his work on "Hamburger Disease" (hemorrhagic colitis caused by EHEC, enterohemorrhagic E. coli). His name has appeared in the well-known publications Science and Discover, as well as international newspapers such as The Washington Post, La Presse and The Seattle Times.
