Summary of Expertise:
Primary Expertise Areas:

(links show more experts in each area)

Expertise Description:

hydrometallurgy expert

Expert has wide experience in hydrometallurgy, and has designed processes incorporating unit operations such as roasting, leaching, liquid-solids separation, purification by solvent extraction, ion exchange, and precipitation. He has processed a wide range of ores for the recovery of many high purity final products, taking into account aspects of economics, energy, and the environment.

metal recovery expert

metal separation expert

solvent extraction expert

uranium recovery expert

Expert has more than 36 years of experience in the use of solvent extraction for metals separation and recovery. As a result of personal research, along with his directing R&D in this area, a number of solvent extraction processes were developed. He has recovered metals which include uranium, thorium, zirconium, tantalum, niobium, rare earths, copper, cobalt, nickel, iron, zinc, manganese, molybdenum, cadmium, gold, platinum, and palladium. A number of patents have been issued for Expert's work. He has written a 2-volume authoritative test on the subject which is used throughout the world. Expert's background has also involved small-continuous pilot plants, plant start-up, and troubleshooting. He has presented short-courses on "Solvent Extraction" in many countries throughout the world. These have either been "open courses" or "in-house" company courses.

uranium expert

uranium processing expert

uranium refining expert

From the beginning of his career and continuing throughout it, Expert has been closely associated with Canada's nuclear industry. This has involved the development of various process technologies in several of the uranium mills. He has worked with the installation of unit operations which included involvement with the research and the start-up of Canada's first solvent extraction plant. He has also developed separation technology and worked on the scale-up to a successful process plant for producing nuclear-purity zirconium (hafnium free) for cladding uranium dioxide nuclear fuel pellets for Canada's CANDU power reactor.

mine-tailings management expert

The major concern of the mining industry today is that of providing for a safe environment during and after the mine ceases operation. This concern for the environment was recognized by Expert a number of years ago, and consequently he initiated research programs to develop methodology to optimize the technological changes that would be required. Eventually an authoritative text on tailings management was published, which is now used internationally. Tailings management designs are now being patterned after the methodology and systems that Expert has helped develop. He has developed a methodology for assessing and testing various types of tailings. He has used simulated accelerated weathering tests to provide designs for disposal techniques, assessment of acid generating potential on land and under water, and the development of cover techniques for close-out. Expert has presented short-courses on "Tailings Management" in many countries throughout the world. These have either been "open courses" or "in-house" company courses.
