As Chairman of Task Group T-3A-6 of NACE International, Expert directed the compilation of a comprehensive report on the prevention of oxygen corrosion in steam generating systems and oil production by means of oxygen scavengers. An expert in oxygen corrosion and its prevention, he contributed substantially to the document, especially the subjects of hydrazine, the mechanisms of oxygen corrosion and its inhibition. In addition, he is the inventor associated with six patents on oxygen scavengers based on catalyzed hydrazine.

Expert has served as technology representative on the business team of a large US manufacturer of hydrazine with responsibility for R&D and the technical support of customer services and marketing staff. The products covered included aqueous hydrazine solutions as well as the anhydrous and alkylated hydrazines that are used in certain types of satellites and the space shuttle. His contributions include an assessment of the explosion risk associated with the aerospace fuel monomethyl hydrazine (MMH) due to possible overheating upon re-entry during the first flight of the space shuttle and the evaluation of alternatives and the ultimate selection of the manufacturing technology for a major plant expansion.

Interested in alternatives to chlorine in all of its water treatment applications and in pulp bleaching, Expert has conducted and supervised hands-on and theoretical research on oxidizing agents.

Expert has a special expertise in all aspects of the manufacture, applications, chemical properties, and safe handling of calcium hypochlorite and chlorinated isocyanurates. This includes their aqueous chemistry, reactions with contaminants, and thermal decomposition reactions at moderate storage temperatures and in fires. As a member of the hazardous chemicals committee of the NFPA, he has participated in the revision of NFPA Standard 430, "Code for the Storage of Liquid and Solid Oxidizers," issued in 1995. Expert has also developed sophisticated computer models for predicting the loss of active chlorine and thermal runaway reactions of calcium hypochlorite during transportation and storage and has participated in the work of an international group of experts on the hazardous properties of explosive and oxidizing substances.
