Expert has expertise in solid state electronics. He pioneered the application of semiconductors in radar-mixers and did research in the VHF-receiver field. These studies prompted later work in crystal physics and transistor electronics. He has authored a book and numerous patents on solid state electronics.
Expert is active in the field of crystal growth. After initial work with germanium, he was the first to apply vacuum-Czochralski-growth to silicon. He studies growth techniques for III-V compounds, especially the vertical Bridgman method for GaAs.
Research of crystalline imperfections has led Expert to the study of the electronic properties of defects, especially dislocations and grain boundaries. Ten years of this work are condensed in Expert's book "Defect Electronics in Semiconductors." These results are also of importance in the present work on the effects of grain boundaries in high-temperature superconductors.
A significant part of Expert's former activities was concerned with the artificial growth of defined defects, especially dislocations with neatly aligned dangling bonds. It turns out that such grain-boundaries are now of great importance for the high-temperature superconducting transistor, the porous silicon device LED and the SQUIDS (superconducting quantum interference devices). Expert is planning a review article on the type of defect required, as most papers on these subjects are based on the 5 to 25 degree (100) tilt boundary without giving crystallographic reasons. The article will provide an overview and review on QW-defect alignment for Josefson-Junctions, SQUIDS, porous silicon devices, etc.

Expert was involved with the original epitaxy work, particularly with silicon on sapphire (SOS). He studied the interface defects and devised the gradient-growth method for semiconductors on insulators. Later, he concentrated on liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) for III-V compounds. For many years, Expert has worked on an application of modern epitaxial methods for the production of high-efficiency III-V-solar cells. He has studied the differences between flat-plate solar arrays and concentrator systems. In cooperation with Pyron, a new system that has crystallized should be the ultimate power system for the underdeveloped world. With new concentrator III-V-Q.W. solar cells of 40% efficiency, such systems should solve energy problems.
In the course of his work with LPE for GaAs, Expert developed a new method to grow large area GaAlAs/GaAs-heterojunctions. From this method, production of LEDs (light emitters) for optical communication was developed and initiated.
The application of a patented LPE process to GaAs-solar cells led Expert to the derivation of the law of the super linear base current increase with concentration. From this effort III-V-PV-concentrator solar cells were produced. Expert is also active in the area of highly efficient photovoltaic cells. He works in conjunction with several companies and has authored a book in this field. He directs his work with solar concentrators toward electric generation.
