adhesion theory expert
adhesion science expert |
Expert has been involved with the theory and practical application of adhesion science for the past 30 years. He developed one of the adhesion theories--molecular bonding mechanism--and applied the hard-soft, acid-base (HSAB) principle to solid adhesion. He edited tweleve books on adhesion, including "Fundamentals of Adhesion" and "Adhesive Bonding," both published in 1991. He has taught a SUNY short-course on fundamentals of adhesion for more than 15 years. |
adhesion expert
adhesive application expert |
Expert has applied various adhesives for making subsystems related to xerographic machines, for example, photoreceptor devices, developers, fusing rollers, and others. In some applications, high-temperature and high-strength (or toughened) adhesives are required. He and his co-inventors have been awarded 11 U.S. patents. He edited the book "Adhesives, Sealants, and Coatings for Space and Harsh Environments," which discusses difficult problems in these areas. |
polymer surface chemistry expert |
Expert developed a theory on the effect of phase transition on surface tension. He discovered a relationship between glass temperature and surface tension of polymers. He determined critical surface tensions for many polymers used today in industry. He applied various methods to modify polymer surfaces, for example, corona charging, plasma treatment, and others. These modifications are chiefly aimed at improving adhesive bonding to polymers and metals.
polymer wear expert |
Expert understands the various polymer wear challenges associated with xerographic machines. He has long been interested in the tribological problems of polymeric materials and has worked specifically on the prevention of wear on roller surfaces to improve service life of copying machine components. He edited two books related to basic tribological studies: "Advances in Polymer Friction and Wear" and "Polymer Wear and Its Control." In addition, Expert has been the Chairman of several international symposia related to adhesion, friction, and wear.
acid-base equilibrium expert |
Expert developed the unified Lewis acid-base theory to resolve many problems regarding the theoretical and practical aspects of the original concept. Several recent publications since 1999 have been mentioned in the cited references. |
contact angle measurement expert |
Contact angle measurement is a common method to obtain surface energies of materials. The measurement by itself is nothing novel; however, the relationship of contact angle to surface energetics requires a good deal of understanding. Expert has published several papers regarding various aspects of that relationship, especially related to polymers. |
interfacial tension expert |
Interfacial tension is the tension either between a liquid and a solid, or between two liquids. The important fact is that there is an initial interfacial tension and a final one. Expert discovered the importance of these two in the actual measurements. Much confusion in the literature was caused by not knowing the distinction between the two. |
linear solvation energy relationships expert |
The linear solvation energy relationship, or LSER, is an empirical method used in determining the effect of various factors affecting the rate of solvation. Expert discovered that there is a relationship between some of these factors related to the surface energetics of acid-base characteristics of liquids. For example, the acid base components of surface tension was shown to be related to alpha (the acidity factor) and beta (the basicity factor)parameters of the relationship (Langmuir. 12, 1681, 1996). |
wettability expert |
Expert notes that surface wettability of a polymer (or a solid) by a liquid is determined from the relation of its surface energy to that of the wetting liquid. Thus, by knowing surface energies of materials, one can predict wettability. For example, water cannot wet Teflon simply because water has a much higher surface tension than that of Teflon. Thus, by measuring contact angle, we obtain a surface energy value of a solid, then using the surface energy value, we can predict the wettability of that solid by various liquids. Wettability of a solid is the key to adhesion. No adhesion can be achieved without the wetting of a solid by a liquid (or adhesive). Expert has determined wettability of many polymers, biopolymers, and solids. By his unified Lewis acid-base theory, he can further obtain the initial (intrinsic) surface energies of some polymers (or solids). Expert further notes that nearly all surface energies of polymers (or solids) reported in the literature are the actual (experimental) values obtained in the presence of a vapor. They are not the initial values. A better prediction of wettability and adhesion can be accomplished by using initial surface energy values. |

Training/Seminars
He has held numerous training seminars on the fundamentals of adhesion. He has given lectures related to surface chemistry, polymer properties, and adhesion.
Other Skills and Services
For special situations (such as to meet environmental requirements), Expert designed "green" technology to obtain special adhesives by water-dispersible emulsions, UV-cured systems, or hot-melt solventless adhesives. One of Expert's books, "Adhesive Chemistry--Developments and Trends," published in 1985 and later translated into Russian in 1988, describes many special-purpose adhesives. His work with polymers has led Expert to expertise in some polymer physical properties. He was involved with making rubber-reinforced, toughened thermoplastics and received three U.S. patents related to acrylonitrile styrene-butadiene (ABS) systems and rubber-reinforced polymethyl methacrylate. A total of 20 patents were awarded for the making of novel monomers and polymers. Not only interested in the toughening of plastics, Expert has pursued a general understanding of basic polymer properties. In the area of xerography, he has gained experience with the triboelectricity of polymers and has recently authored a paper on the dual mechanism of contact charging of metal and polymers. His book "New Trends in Physics and Physical Chemistry of Polymers" was published in 1990. In addition, Expert has been the Chairman of several international symposia related to adhesion, friction, and wear.
