Expert divides his time between Yale and Congruent Design, Inc. At Yale he does research at Yale in ROBOTICS, MEASUREMENT and DESIGN METHODS and teaches a project-oriented electronics course in INSTRUMENTATION and PRODUCT DESIGN. As President/Founder of Congruent Design, Inc. he provides to industry his considerable experience in these areas, going back to his founding of Yale's Instrumentation Lab in 1966 as a university-wide facility for research support design. His consulting ranges from studies of the best technology for new products to the complete design and fabrication of MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS and PRODUCT PROTOTYPES. These designs often address a difficult measurement issue. His interaction with industry has resulted in a variety of successful products and processes. A multimillion dollar ELECTROMAGNETIC METAL CASTING project, based on his process measurement and control, has led to 12 patents. Other projects include overall responsibility for measurement and control on a new 22MeV VAN DE GRAAF GENERATOR, products implementing new ELECTROPHORESIS techniques for genetics research, specialized WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT (for Three Mile Island cleanup crews), AUTOMOTIVE IGNITION SYSTEMS, and CONSUMER HEALTH CARE PRODUCTS. His familiarity with a broad spectrum of INTEGRATED CIRCUITS and SENSOR TECHNOLOGY as well as the scientific principles of measurement, allow him to devise new approaches to the development of products deriving from research in the physical and biological sciences. He has also designed new products for companies manufacturing ELECTRONIC MEASUREMENT INSTRUMENTS, CALIBRATION INSTRUMENTS and CONSUMER ELECTRONICS. He is past coordinator of the industrial liaison program for the Department of Engineering and Applied Science (1976-78). Overall he feels that his academic and industrial experience has been mutually beneficial to his client companies and his students.
