Part of Expert' career has been devoted to understanding the fundamental steps in homogeneous catalysis. Transition metal organometallic chemistry has provided the basis for his studies.
The results of Expert' studies of metal complexes has provided new routes for the synthesis of new polymers. He has prepared living systems, telechelic polymers, and block polymers.
Many of the new reactions resulting from Expert' studies in organometallic synthesis have provided new synthetic strategies for the synthesis of bioactive molecules.

Dr. Grubb's field of expertise is organometallic chemistry and catalysis, especially organometallic, organic and polymer chemistry associated with early transition metal carbene and metallacycle complexes. His major focus has been the synthesis of new polymers with controlled structures. The materials synthesized have been studied as electrical conductors, as ionophores, and in new optical devices. Expert has initiated programs in the area of organometallic reaction mechanisms and in the synthesis of polymer attached catalysts. The olefin metathesis reaction, Ziegler polymerization, and the reactions of metallacycles and cyclobutadiene complexes were the focus of his mechanistic research.
