While at Southwest Bell, Expert implemented forms and consulted on the development of applications programs to demand print completed expense reimbursement requests for signature. This project involved the conversion of PostScript files designed using wordprocessing software, design and implementation of custom written PostScript programs, and the design of interfaces to permit applications programs written in COBOL to generate the variable data for inclusion in the demand-printed forms. For a client in the financial services industry, Expert consulted on the design, implementation, and enhancement of an applications system which generates in excess of 1 million pages of PostScript output per month. He has helped clients with the design, implementation, and debugging of PostScript emitting back-ends for applications. These projects typically involve the total design and implementation of the output back-end, the design of the interfaces between the applications program itself and the forms-producing back-end, and the modular design of the PostScript output stream to produce different output requirements.

For several clients, Expert has converted artwork produced by a variety of desktop design, drawing, and publishing packages into PostScript macros which can be downloaded into a printer and referenced easily from an output stream generated by applications programs. He has consulted on techniques for improving the performance of PostScript jobs, both in terms of raw size and coding style to improve the speed of processing within the printer.

Expert has been an active developer and manager of VAX, Alpha, and Itanium systems running OpenVMS since its initial release as VAX/VMS in 1977. He holds HP's Certified Systems Administrator (CSA) and Certified Systems Engineer (CSE) accreditations for OpenVMS. In addition to his consulting practice, he has spoken often, for more than 20 years, on a wide variety of OpenVMS-related technical topics, ranging from applications design to low-level systems issues, throughout the world. He is the author of numerous articles on OpenVMS and its utilization, as well as the author of an upcomming book chapter on OpenVMS.

Expert has been following the development of Intel's IA-64, known as Itanium(R) for several years. Since September 2001, shortly after then COMPAQ's (formerly Digital; now HP) OpenVMS Engineering Team announced the adoption of the IA-64 processor architecture as a platform for OpenVMS, Expert has spoken extensively on the issues surrounding the use of OpenVMS on Integrity (HP's name for servers using Intel IA-64 architecture). In addition to speaking Expert has written articles detailing the state of the technology and the details of adopting it within organizations. His experience with earlier processors (from Floating Point Systems and other processors) as well as his experience with the explicit parallelism inherent in microcode has given him a unique perspective on the mass adoption of the explicit parallelism that is a fundamental part of IA-64. Expert's in-house computing stable includes OpenVMS on Itanium, running on an rx2600 dual processor system.
