Expert has more than 30 years of experience in caring for newborn infants and in teaching neonatology to other physicians. Since 1963, his role as a clinician and teacher has focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases in newborn infants. He likes to emphasize both newborn physiology and the relationship between maternal and neonatal diseases. He is interested in newborn screening for metabolic diseases and in non-invasive monitoring at the bedside. His primary research activities relate to non-invasive monitoring and to trace gas production by neonates. His publications and patents reflect an interest in transcutaneous measures of blood oxygenation and serum bilirubin levels. He has expertise in measuring carbon monoxide exhalation to quantify red blood cell destruction and bilirubin production. He is credited with linking hydrogen-producing bacteria to the pathogenesis of necrotizing enterocolitis. Expert has conducted several clinical evaluations of commercial products.

Expert has done clinical studies relating breath carbon monoxide levels to both bilirubin production and heme destruction as a measure of the red cell life span. He is involved in linking breath hydrogen gas exhalation to the early detection of necrotizing enterocolitis. He has also done research on transcutaneous monitoring of blood oxygen and carbon dioxide levels.

During the last two years, Expert's laboratory research has been directed at identifying molecules that have antioxidant activity in the two fluid compartments of the eye (aqueous and vitreous humor). In particular, he and his colleagues are finding that ascorbic acid alone accounts for most of the antioxidant activity of aqueous and vitreous humor in vitro.
Expert has found that transcutaneous monitoring of blood oxygenation, carbon dioxide tension, serum bilirubin levels, and electrical impedance can provide clinically useful information on neonates who have limited access for blood sampling. As a practicing neonatologist, he has used the modalities at the bedside, and he has conducted published clinical studies with these instruments.
