SPUTTER DEPOSITION PROCESS. Since 1963 Expert has worked with the many aspects of sputter deposition of metal films in various systems and configurations. He developed and continues to teach a short course on sputtering systems under the auspices of the American Vacuum Society. He is often called upon to answer questions on DC sputtering, argon sputtering, diode sputtering, ion sputtering, and magnetron sputtering from clients in the semiconductor, optical coatings, magnetic disk, and decorative coatings industries. REACTIVE SPUTTERING. Expert has worked on reactive sputtering since the mid-1960s. He has developed several new methods for film deposition, written review articles, and introduced TiN1.2 diffusion barriers for III-V lasers. THIN-FILM TECHNOLOGY; THIN-FILM DEPOSITION. Expert has been involved with the various aspects of deposition, etching, and processing of thin films since 1963. He has worked with magnetic oxides, thin-film resistors, optical films, and semiconductor metallization. THIN-FILM ANALYSIS. An expert in thin-film analysis, Expert has carried out Auger analysis of films and supervised the development of SIMS methods for analysis. He has conducted detailed analysis of the interfaces between films and film and substrates for adhesion improvement. In addition, Expert developed in-situ optical monitoring of sputtering processes. INTEGRATED OPTICS; INTEGRATED OPTOELECTRONICS SCIENCE. Expert has been involved with the fabrication of waveguides in dielectric, semiconductor, and polymer films since 1971. He developed integrated optics measuring techniques for dielectric film evaluation including birefringence. SEMICONDUCTOR WAFER PROCESSING; SEMICONDUCTOR METALLIZATION. Expert developed Al-Si magnetron sputtering for Si integrated circuits in 1974. He directed the fabrication of GaAs- and InP-based optoelectronic and electronic integrated circuits since 1980, moving from 1 cm(2) to 4-inch diameter substrates for 10 Gb/s ICs.
