tetracycline expert

APPLIED CHEMISTRY. Expert has over 35 years of experience in fermentation technology, which he considers as the overlap of chemistry, industrial microbiology, and biochemical engineering. Twenty years of his industrial experience was as an internal consultant serving groups engaged in discovery and process improvement in the field of antibiotics. Many problems having a more-or-less chemical basis were referred to him, and they required a broad base of knowledge in applying chemical principles. The problems which he dealt with covered a gamut from laboratory scale to production scale. Frequently, they involved the application of knowledge from outside the field at hand. Expert's methods of attack on problems are innovative and creative. His specialty was, and is, practical solution to difficult problems.

TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS. When he wasn't occupied with the problems of others, Expert directed a program of research dealing with the known family of tetracycline antibiotics. His research resulted in the discovery of several new tetracycline antibiotics, at least two of which are still in clinical use. His experience with the tetracyclines involved all stages. These included soil screening methodology, microbial biochemistry, production by fermentation, isolation from fermentation broths, chemical modification, establishment of product specifications, and development of analytical methods--especially methods utilizing ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy.

FERMENTATION TECHNOLOGY; INDUSTRIAL FERMENTATION. Expert has experience with the interfaces between chemistry, microbiology, and bioengineering. He has successfully participated in chemical problems associated with fermentation. These have included medium development, pH manipulation and control, aeration and ventilation, process control associated with continuous nutrient feed, agitation, scale-up, sterilization, and continuous fermentation. In one of his notable research problems in a fermentation-like area, Expert instituted and carried out an intensive study of the potential of plant tissue culture as a source of normal plant metabolites.

ANTIBIOTICS. Expert's experience with antibiotics has, in general, been in the devising of screening and selection methods for soil microorganisms. He has especially worked with the development of new miniaturized and automated methodologies. This has included the mutation and selection of organisms and radioisotope tracer studies of metabolic pathways.
