Expert' career extends over 40 years and includes work in the laboratory, classroom, and clinic. Certified in the subspecialty of hematology, he is a distinguished expert in the field of hematology research and hemorrhagic disorders. He has done extensive research on blood platelets and subcellular platelet particles. He has also conducted studies on thrombosis, platelet protein (including platelet thrombosthenin function), the platelet endothelial cell, platelet-erythrocyte, and platelet-neutrophil. He is also knowledgeable in prostaglandins and abnormalities of platelet and vascular function. Expert also received certification in internal medicine from the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Expert is noted as one of the founders of the discipline of vascular biology. He has also studied the role of platelets and other cells in cardiovascular diseases. An enzyme that he is currently studying for the prevention of platelet accumulation is also present in the salivary secretions of mosquitoes. This factor adds an additional dimension to studies of this ADPase enzyme, since its inhibition in insects might lead to therapeutic modalities for the prevention of insect-borne disorders such as malaria. This coincidence emphasizes the importance of basic research observations that may later lead to important developments in public health.

His pioneering research in platelet biochemistry has provided new dimensions of understanding of the phenomena of blood vessel occlusion, blood coagulation, and host defense mechanisms. These processes are crucial for the formation of the atherosclerotic plaques that subsequently lead to occlusive vascular disorders. His insights have resulted in entirely new advances and clinical concepts in cardiovascular research. Other highlights of his research include biochemical characterization of the effect of aspirin on platelet function. He created the partial thromboplastin time (PTT) test, a method used throughout the world for evaluating blood coagulation in patients. He discovered arachidonic acid in blood platelets, a fatty acid that is the precursor of other substances (eicosanoids or prostaglandins) that are responsible for constriction and/or dilation of blood vessels during coagulation and the inflammatory response. Expert originated the concept of cell-cell interactions, which has had a profound effect on research in a wide variety of disciplines. The basis of this concept is that different types of cells communicate and interact with each other resulting in metabolic products that neither cell could synthesize alone. These results emanated from the technique of studying cells in combined suspension

Highlights of Expert' achievements are the studies on platelet lipids and lipid metabolism; the structural and ultrastructural studies on platelet membranes, granules, and cytoskeleton; and the body of work on interactions between vascular cells and the resulting cellular cross-talk. He has researched the regulation of platelet thrombogenic responses by endothelial cells, which has a clear potential to lead to new therapeutic approaches for the treatment of thrombotic diseases. Expert' research has been of fundamental importance for the development of anti-thrombotic therapy. His studies on the effects of aspirin on platelet metabolism have created a foundation onto which the use of this drug for treating cardiovascular disease and stroke has been developed.

His work and research are widely published and include the study of blood platelet phospholipids, their role in coagulation, and their metabolism. His landmark publication with Dr. Marjorie Zucker, "The Physiology of Blood Platelets," was the first comprehensive scientific document on platelets.
