Summary of Expertise: Listed with other top experts in:
For 40 years, Expert's primary focus has been working on and directing the engineering of new or improved fluid lines, fittings, and tools for hydraulic conduit, including pipe, tube, and hose, from vacuum to several thousand psi. He has devised his own theories and empirical approaches, as well as tests and test equipment. He has 16 patents, reading mostly in the areas of fittings and the means of attaching them. Expert has worked on or directed most of the advising and troubleshooting for customers, involving hundreds of visits and thousands of letters and telephone calls.

Expert handled field failures alone for 20 years, then began to delegate it when the frequency of requests began to exceed two per day. However, he is continuing to consult as needed. This was not as time-consuming as it sounds, because most of these were obviously similar to common lab failures. Some of this work required field trips to the affected areas.
 •

plastic failure

 •

plastic failure analysis

Much of Expert's work has involved deliberately causing failures (deformation or fracture), calculating them, or explaining why they occurred. He uses a variety of materials, hard or soft metals, plastics, fibers; which might be sound, unsound, or possess obscure defects. It has been a constant concern during the design process to predict the effect of such defects.
 •

fracture stress

 •

instantaneous strain

Fluid power lines and fittings are known to fail from repeated loading. Expert ran all endurance tests for four years, and supervised them for another 24, working on about 80,000 samples in all. He also dissected about 1,000, plus several hundred field failures. He developed the first life-versus-pressure curve for hose, a factor which made his laboratory many times more efficient. He also worked out how to identify ordinary fatigue failures unrelated to pressure.

 •

 •

 •

torsional fatigue

While he has worked out numerous fluid circuits, Expert's greatest strengths in this area are his understanding that the secondary characteristics of the circuits often are not evident from the electrical modeling of their equations, plus the need to check total energy and transient pressure. "Spikes" of pressure, or even vacuum, are often only the critical leads.

 •

 •

 •

liquid state mechanics

Expert can calculate liquid (not gas, vapor, or slurry) pressure drop for an actual fluid line, including bends and fittings. A follow-up call is needed only if the caller does not have complete information.
 •

internal flow

Expert has investigated insurance and legal claims since 1962, contributed significantly to two industrial safety standards, and worked up warnings and safety pamphlets since the 1960s.

 •

Expert has 40 years of experience with designing hose fittings, tube fittings, valves, hoses, crimpers, and test stands (or improving them). He is a veteran of countless battles over cost reduction versus product reduction, where he prides himself for simultaneously reducing costs and improving function. He worked up Latin Square and other statistical means of testing tolerance effects without special "tolerance" samples.
 •

design for manufacturability

 •

mechanical device design

 •

vacuum measurement

Expert worked out the means of combining two and three dimensional statics with the directional variations in material properties to obtain real results and discard the "Factor of Safety" concept.
 •

statics

 •

solid mechanical property

Expert developed sturdier parts of 12L14 steel than competitors' near-identical parts of 1137, by balanced design and unconventional heat-treatment. Final costs were greatly reduced because of improved machineability. This program went on for over 30 years because of the hundreds of individual components, each largely considered on a one-by-one basis.
 •

carbon steel

Expert has done considerable successful work on stationary seals and glands, including metal-to-metal types. He designed the sealing combination known as the SAE Boss, which has now been metricized into the ISO Boss.
 •

hydraulic packing

Expert has been on seven SAE Standards Committees, some since 1961 (and continuing after retirement), as well as the National Fluid Power Association Hose Assemblies Technical Committee (which he founded and chaired), ASTM, NHAMA, ISO USATag, and RMA Ad Hoc. He has also written and controlled company standards, and worked with or under numerous MIL standards.
 •

materials standard

 •

Society of Automotive Engineers standard

Expert can predict the precision of a calculated or empirical result, based upon assumed or inherent errors of the input.
 •

measurement error analysis

ANALYSIS OF TECHNICAL REPORTS. Even well-intentioned technical reports commonly may be flawed in three areas: (1) Samples or data are badly selected or faked, (2) Conclusions are pre-ordained, and (3) Conclusions are misread by subjective reading. Expert has experience with detecting all three flaws thusly: (1) A close study of the samples, which are often retained, showing that the data is non-random or otherwise atypical. (2) Reviewing statements made prior to the test, then retracing the steps from data to conclusions in different ways. (3) Studying what the conclusions actually say. In addition, he has sometimes repeated the whole test with the same samples, when he is able to do so.
