Summary of Expertise: Listed with other top experts in:
ELASTOMER; RUBBER CHEMISTRY; POLYMER AND ELASTOMER MECHANICAL PROPERTY. Expert has expertise gained from his work experience in a government laboratory, concentrating on polymers and primarily elastomers. This experience has been enhanced by independent consulting work in the last five years where clients wanted specific recommendations for elastomers and plastics subjected to various environments (temperature, liquid interactions mechanical stresses).

POLYMER TESTING. He is very familiar with ASTM methods for testing polymers (especially elastomers) for swelling, wear, and mechanical properties. His knowledge in these areas played a key part in a recent legal case. He also obtained data used to defend the US government against a law suit involving vulcanization. Another key responsibility involved determining the resistance of polymers to organophosphorous chemicals and other materials related to chemical protection. He worked on moisture/vapor-permeable water-impermeable polymers. He has also studied elastomers in gasket applications.

MATERIAL, POLYMER, AND ELASTOMER SELECTION FOR CHEMICAL COMPATIBLITY; PLASTIC. Much of Expert's recent work has involved solving problems related to the change in properties of plastics and elastomers in aggressive and non-aggressive liquids. This includes swelling and deterioration as well as stress-strain and failure properties. (This experience was also critical to the successful conclusion of the legal case mentioned above.)

TEXTILE; FIRE RESISTANT MATERIAL; PROTECTIVE CLOTHING. From 1956 onward, Expert has had a strong interest in the mechanical properties of textiles. He worked primarily on ballistic protection applications. He was editor of a book on ballistic protection and penetration mechanics in 1980. He helped defend the DoD in a suit involving ceramic armor based upon material in his book. He is also familiar with flameproofing, especially of textiles. His work on chemical protection centered on protection by sorption and by barrier materials. The work was aimed at developing protective uniforms, gloves, boots, shelters, etc.

ACTIVATED CARBON; CHEMICAL WARFARE AGENT. While at the Natuck Laboratory, Expert gained extensive experience with activated carbon because of its importance in protection against chemicals. His work involved the defense against chemical warfare agents as well as spinoff applications involving certain pesticides. He is familiar with the manufacturers of activated carbon and has contacts at government labs.
