Much of Expert's career has focused upon the application of scientific information and models to issues of health effects from radiation and chemicals. He has performed approximately 10 risk analyses in support of regulatory efforts by the USEPA, and has developed models used in these analyses.

Expert has extensive experience developing mathematical models and formal procedures of evidential reasoning for predictions of the carcinogenecity of radiation, radioactivity, and chemicals. These models include consideration of the interaction between carcinogens such as those that might be found at superfund sites.

Expert has performed numerous radiological surveys. This has included work on environmental radon, uranium, and plutonium, and has involved the development of instruments, the design of sampling programs, and the development of quality assurance.

|
Expert has been the primary dosimetrist on approximately 10 epidemiological studies. His work has focused primarily upon the reconstruction of radiation doses received by human populations, including both environmental and occupational exposures.

Expert received the Health Physics Society Student Paper Award (1980) and the IBM Junior Faculty Development Award (1984). He was awarded a Fulbright to Austria in 1995-96.

He has also co-authored several reports together with other members of the off-site pollutants measurement group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
