He uses mainly 19th century machinery for production operations, including gunboring and lathe turning of barrel castings weighing up to a ton. He is familiar with the evolution of manufacture from the late Middle Ages to the post-Civil War years, as well as various methods used for modern replication of muzzleloading artillery. Expert's clients include sailing ships, forts, museums, film producers, parks and historic site departments. Expert was instrumental in amending federal law by unanimous congressional vote to allow participants in the antique shooting sports fair access to black powder for sporting, recreational, and cultural use in antique and antique/replica arms. He is author of a substantial reference catalog and a book on linethrowing ordnance used in rescue operations from the 18th to 20th centuries, and has contributed materially and editorially to a safety-related text by another author.
