Summary of Expertise:

Listed with other top experts in:

Expert has devoted his career to the field of color science. He uses colorimeters, spectrophotometers, and glossmeters to measure color and gloss, to determine compliance with existing color specification and to set specification and tolerances around them. He is conversant with optical characteristics of materials and can recommend appropriate instruments and their specific use, as well as data handling techniques. He has worked with a variety of materials, including solids and liquids, wet and dry coatings, paints, inks, molded and extruded plastics, textiles, soils, rocks, fruits and vegetables, flowers, oils, glass, ceramics, and porcelains. He provides expert knowledge on almost all aspects of appearance of materials and manufactured products, to include visibility and legibility of signs and signals, as well as safety and high visibility colors. He consults with attorneys and testifies in legal cases as an expert witness. He conducts one- and two-day seminars for a manufacturer of color measuring instruments. He performs topical research for industry over both the short and long term.

Expert is particularly knowledgeable with respect to material color standards and spent the first 22 years of his career with the Munsell Color Company, the principal worldwide producer of such standards, chiefly in the form of pigmented lacquers on paper. These are often organized into color charts and collections of such charts. Much of his work has involved setting color standards for industry and specifying tests for compliance. He is active in standards development organizations such as ANSI, ASTM, CIE, and IESNA. He has been actively involved in the standards work of ASTM Committee E-12 on Appearance, the principal groups writing appearance standards in North America, and has been active in development of standards for highway signs, pavement markings, retroreflective signs, safety signs, and hazard warning signs.

Expert has extensive knowledge and experience in specifying and measuring such colors as used for vehicles and individual safety, as well as fluorescent colorants for fabrics. He has recently been producing color charts for cataloging fluorescent minerals and related materials which emit colored light when excited by ultraviolet energy.
 •

fluorescent color standard

Expert has developed with a colleague a visual color order system for colored gemstones and a colorimeter for measurement of gemstones. He is working on a standard for the fluorescent appearance of colorless gemstones (e.g., diamonds) as they appear under UV excitation.

Expert is conversant in the methods of orderly specifying the color universe, or some subset of it, in terms of data points in CIE or some other color space, as well as the next step, the production of the physical representation of the color order system, usually in the form of paint on paper. He can specify color universe subsets covering colors of soils, rocks, plants, and other products. He also provides abridged color series for illumination engineering, color grading of agricultural products, flower colors, bird colors, and colors for color coding of wire insulation and electronic components.

Expert is knowledgeable of experimental procedures to determine the relative visibility and conspicuity of these materials under daytime and nighttime viewing conditions. He is familiar with the concepts involved in determining brightness:luminance ratios, which relate to the fact that vivid colored lights and retroflectors appear visually brighter than their measured values (luminances) would indicate.

Expert is working in the new field of appearance standards, which involve the production of a series of images that show changes in texture or pattern achieved by sophisticated computer graphics technology. This evolution in texture and patterns can be seen in how the appearance as fruits and vegetables change as they mature. Manufactured products change appearances as a function of weathering, aging, and other exposures. Raw materials (building stones, bricks, wood) are available across a wide range of patterns and textures. A series of graphic representations of these materials is often desirable. Pictures of scale end-points, such as a newly-painted product and the same product after weathering, can be graphically modified to show multi-stepped scales between such end-points, allowing tolerances for change to be determined and displayed. Single pictures, such as a slice of bread, can be selectively modified to show specific limits while leaving the product appearance otherwise unchanged. For example, the major voids (holes) can be changed in size. This is not simple magnification and reduction. This capability can result in either prints or transparencies, in color or black and white.
