TELEVISION EQUIPMENT; COLOR TELEVISION; VIDEOTAPE RECORDER. Expert has over 40 years of experience with television and television equipment. He worked on the development of videotape recorders beginning in the late 1950s, flat panel displays in the 1960's, cable television systems in the early 1970s, television receiver circuitry (electronic tubing and comb filters) in the mid-1970s and digital TV, including HDTV, in the 1980's and 1990's. TELECOMMUNICATION BROADCAST. He was involved with the development of television broadcast equipment (especially automatic and CCD cameras) throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s. His research efforts on broadcast cameras led to Emmy awards from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. He can also answer questions related to television stations and studios. HIGH DEFINITION TELEVISION (HDTV). Expert has extensive experience in the development of high definition television. He has worked closely with the FCC Advisory Committee and is active with industry committees (see Affiliations and Accomplishments) related to HDTV. He developed early HDTV demonstration systems while at Expert's Firm in the early 1980s. FLAT-PANEL DISPLAY; ACTIVE-MATRIX LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY; SOCIETY FOR INFORMATION DISPLAY. Expert was a pioneer in active matrix liquid crystal displays. His 1971 IEEE Proceedings paper on flat-panel displays is still widely referenced and considered a seminal work. He is an active participant (and past President) with the Society for Informational Display (SID). He consults regularly with a leading-edge flat-panel display company. CABLE TELEVISION. Expert has been active in cable television since 1971 and a pioneer in 2-way cable TV systems. He is active with cable-TV industry committees and consults often with cable-TV service companies. BROADBAND COMMUNICATION. Expert has general expertise in communications systems (analog and digital) especially relating to audio and video transmission. FEDERAL COMMUNICATION STANDARDS; TELEVISION STANDARDS. He is experienced with international and FCC codes and standards relating to communications. He has participated in CCIR activities from the late 1970s and especially 1989 through 1992. He also has local and international experience in FCC, ISO, and ITU standards relating to television. Currently Expert is active in IEEE, SMPTE, ATSC, CEMA, SCTE, and NCTA, all of which are working on television standards.

Expert is an active participant in various groups working on standards for Advanced Television Systems in the United States, including the FCC Advisory Committee on Advanced Television Service and a number of SMPTE Committees. He has been a member of the National Cable Television Association Engineering Committee since 1977.

Professional Appointments
Expert is the Chairman of the Advanced Television Systems Committee's Specialists Group on Transport Systems. He also chairs the NCTA/CEMA Digital Standards Subcommittee concerned with standards for cable-ready digital TV receivers. He chaired an SMPTE Ad Hoc Group on Colorimetry and Transfer Characteristics as well as the SMPTE Working Group on Headers and Descriptors. His work with SMPTE has led to two SMPTE Standards, SMPTE-298M and SMPTE-310M. He was Chairman of the Teletext Committee of the Electronic Industries Association. He is a Fellow of IEEE, SMTPE and the Society for Information Display (SID) and is a member of Sigma Xi.

Awards/Recognition
Expert led the research teams for two of the broadcast camera projects awarded Emmy's by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. He received two Expert's Firm Laboratories Outstanding Achievement Awards and a David Sarnoff Team Award in Science.

Expert Witness Experience Summary:
|
|
Expert is an experienced expert witness. He is very knowledgeable of patent matters and, while at Expert's Firm, served as an advisor to the Corporate Patent Department, helping to prioritize disclosures and draft claims. He testified as an expert witness for Expert's Firm in a patent interference case, which was won by Expert's Firm. Since becoming an independent consultant, Expert has advised several clients, including some major patent and trademark law firms, on patent matters, prepared a number of affidavits and declarations, and given depositions. In 1989 he was witness for the plaintiff in a false advertising claim case involving a computer display. In 1990, he testified on behalf of the US Government in a satellite interference case which resulted in a conviction on criminal charges. More recently Expert's courtroom experience includes testifying several times as a technical expert in Federal Court in patent cases, including two Markman hearings and an inequitable conduct trial.
