AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL. Expert has expertise in the development of new nitrogen-strengthened steels. He was the U.S. representative to the High Nitrogen in Steels International Conference. He has also published three review papers and about 50 technical papers on low-temperature properties (tensile, toughness, impact, fatigue, creep, and physical properties). FIBER-REINFORCED COMPOSITES; FIBER-REINFORCED PLASTICS; GLASS FIBER POLYMER COMPOSITES; POLYMER MATRIX COMPOSITES. Expert has supervised and consulted on programs that utilized fiber-reinforced composites in cryogenic structures. His company has fabricated large composite cylinders (50 mm thick, 1500-3000 mm dia.). He has had responsibility for the R&D and coordinated, on site, the vacuum-pressure epoxy-resin impregnation of the largest high-field superconducting coil in the United States. He has cooperated in the development of an improved radiation-resistant, lower viscosity, longer working resin for impregnation of large glass-reinforced composite structures. CRYOGENIC COMPOSITE ELECTRICAL INSULATION. Expert's company has had responsibility for insulation research, development, and fabrication for the U.S. portion of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) program. This includes development of cowound Kapton/prepreg tape and development of unique manufacturing facilities for large-scale cylinders, and a new filled-epoxy paint. Cryogenic Materials has also conducted R&D for the Korean national fusion research center on resin properties and processing for their superconducting coils for a central solenoid. CRYOGENIC STRUCTURAL MATERIALS. Expert has served as a consultant for materials selection and properties for cryogenic structures, including LNG, aerospace, and applied superconductivity. LOW TEMPERATURE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES. Expert has published many papers on tensile properties; adiabatic heating effects during testing; and the effects of grain size, chemistry, and phase transformations on tensile properties at low temperatures. He has studied the relationships between low-temperature toughness and strength and the effects of metallurgical variables on toughness. He has assisted in the development of J-integral fracture-toughness test techniques and standardization and has used fracture mechanics analysis for the development of fracture criteria and allowable flaw sizes. He has led in the development of test procedures for fatigue and creep measurements at very low temperatures.
