Summary of Expertise:
Primary Expertise Areas:

(links show more experts in each area)

Expertise Description:

vortex expert

wake expert

Expert undertook a three-year research project to study the near and far vortex wake of an aircraft. Flight testing, wind tunnel, and analytical studies were performed. A summary paper presented the first detailed measurements ever obtained on the far wake of an aircraft. He has testified in six litigation cases involving wake turbulence.

airfoil expert

Expert has written two textbooks which include chapters devoted to the behavior of airfoils. He has studied airfoil behavior of marine propellors for two years. By teaching undergraduate and graduate courses on aerodynamics, he keeps abreast of the latest airfoil developments.

aircraft expert

aircraft control expert

aviation science expert

aircraft code expert

Both of Expert's textbooks deal with the design and analysis of aircraft. He spent two summers and six months at NASA's Langley Research Center doing research on aircraft operational problems. He has been responsible for helicopter stability and control at Vertol Aircraft Company. He has taught aircraft design, stability, and control courses and presently consults with an aircraft manufacturer.

marine propeller expert

propeller expert

Expert was the project engineer on a research project on torpedo propeller design for five years. His knowledge of propeller analysis is described in two textbooks. His research on torpedo propellers resulted in doubling the silent speed of torpedoes. As Chief of Aerodynamics for the Vertol Aircraft Company, he was involved in the design of propellers and rotors. The methods which were developed from his research are the basis for the design of today's stern-operating submarine propellers. He also designed propellers for Evinrude Outboard Motors. He wrote a large computer program under a NASA contract to TRW to design propellers for general aviation.

helicopter expert

helicopter aerodynamics expert

Expert has taught courses on helicopter aerodynamics and dynamics for 25 years. He currently lectures in and coordinates a short course on helicopter design.

hydrodynamics expert

submarine hydrodynamics expert

Expert has considerable experience in conducting water tunnel tests relating to cavitation, marine propellers, drag, stability, and control of submerged bodies. He has worked on the hydrodynamic design of torpedoes and submarines. He has consulted on marine propellers, ducted fans, and planing boat hulls. His Ph.D. thesis was related to vortex cavitation.

aerodynamic drag expert

Expert has performed flight testing to reduce the drag of helicopters and wind tunnel testing on the drag of helicopters and wind tunnel testing on the drag on many shapes including trains. He was the project engineer on a two-year field testing program to reduce the drag of torpedoes by the use of laminar flow control.

short takeoff and landing aircraft expert

vertical or short take-off and landing aircraft expert

Expert's first textbook is entitled "Aerodynamics of V/STOL Flight" and is the only textbook available on this subject. He lectures in an annual short course on V/STOL aircraft. He participated in the design of the first successful tilt-wing aircraft undertaking stability and control studies, transition studies, and the design of the propeller. Some of the first data on unsteady jet flaps was obtained by one of his graduate students while several others have completed theses related to jet flaps and high lift systems.

aerodynamics expert

A teacher, researcher, and consultant in the field of aerodynamics, Expert is an expert in a variety of aerodynamic problems including applications in helicopter rotors, trains, underwater bodies, airplanes, propellers, fans, and wind power generation. He has written two textbooks covering the many facets of this field. He has chaired a committee which evaluated DOE's program on wind energy.

aircraft accident reconstruction expert

Expert has been involved in approximately 50 cases of aircraft accident litigation. He has provided expertise in activities such as flight testing, analysis of stability and control, study of wreckage, performance calculations, possible pilot error (he is an instrument-rated private pilot), and airload and structural calculations. Expert co-authored the reference book, "Aircraft Accident Reconstruction and Litigation", put out in 1995 by Lawyers and Judges Publications.

applied aerodynamics expert

Expert has 50 years of experience doing and teaching applied aerodynamics. He has also authored one of the recognized texbooks on applied aerodynamics.

autogiro expert

Expert consulted on a new autogiro and designed the rotor. He also recently presented a paper concerned with predicting the performance of an autogiro rotor.

Bernoulli equation expert

Bernoulli theorem expert

Expert has a Ph.D. in Aeronautical Engineering and has used Bernoulli's concepts repeatedly.

helicopter rotor blade expert

Expert was Chief of Arodynamics for the Vertol Corporation and helped to design the CH-46 and has worked on several other projects conderning the design of rotor blades.

flight expert
